Day in the Life of a Content Marketer
What does a typical day in the life look like for me as a full-stack content marketer?
Hey Content Captain,
If you’ve ever asked yourself:
“What does a content marketer do?”
You’re not alone.
Although content marketing is a growing marketing discipline, most people have no idea what a typical day in the life looks like for content marketers.
That’s why I’m going to breakdown what a typical day in the life as a full-stack content marketer looks like for me in my current role—schedule, tasks, salary…the works.
A Day in the Life of a Content Marketer
Every day is different.
But there are several parts of my day I try to keep consistent.
Whether it’s the early morning coffee, walk, and idea jotting or the midday hoop session or workout—these consistencies are what keep me fresh and flexible to engage in a day’s work.
As a full-stack content marketer at a hyper-growth SaaS startup, I’m responsible for the strategy, planning, creation, and distribution of content marketing assets like:
One-pagers, blogs, and case studies
Emails, ad sets, and slide decks
Social graphics, videos, and web pages
But that’s not all.
I also lead a team of three content marketers (and three agencies), each of which specialize in their own respective areas: brand design, content writing, and web development.
Plus, I support other cross-functional teams in creating pitch decks, sales proposals, messaging and positioning frameworks, SEO, and much more.
Due to my current scope of work, I’m paid ~$190K a year (base salary).
So when I tell you becoming a full-stack content marketer will unlock high earning potential for you, I mean it.
Because I live it.
Here’s a quick overview of a typical day:
Early morning: I’m usually up around 6AM and I immediately start coffee. The morning time is when I have my best ideas, so as the water boils I always jot down a ton of notes, thoughts, and ideas. After coffee I’ll hit a little walk around the neighborhood and get ready for the day ahead.
Morning: At this point in my career, my mornings are full of meetings. Not super ideal since I’m an individual contributor (IC) at heart—meaning I like to do the work. But, it comes with growing into a leadership role. I’ll meet with other marketing leaders, cross-functional teams, and my own team to conduct check-ins, delegate, and unblock.
Midday: I’m usually screened-out after my morning meetings, so that’s when I’ll take a 30-45 minute break to go on a longer walk, play basketball, or hit a quick workout. This such an important part of my day, yet the hardest to do sometimes. It may feel like you can be more productive by just skipping this and plowing through your day. But I’m convinced otherwise. This break makes me do better, more efficient work.
Afternoon: Now that my team and colleagues are empowered to do their work, I’ll usually get the chance to do real content marketing work. Whether I’m supporting my own team in getting a project done—say a new web page, case study, or slide deck—or I’m working on future planning, this part of my day is heads down time.
Evening: This is the time when I get to wind down for the day, and plan for the following day’s work. I’ll also hit another walk around this time, and try and transition my thoughts from work to life as best as possible. The rest of my evening will be spent reading, writing, or simply playing a board game to chill and get ready for another day.
Hopefully this gives you a better idea about what content marketers do.
And if this sounds like something you’d like to do, too…
Then welcome aboard.
Thanks for reading,
A morning routine is key.
Every time I fail to get mine through my day is only half as productive
